Lifeguards guarantee safety and protect lives by minimizing dangerous events and behaviors, following regulations and enforcing safety rules, and recognizing and quickly reacting to any type of emergency. Lifeguard Certification for entry-level lifeguard participants trains to prevent, recognize, and respond to aquatic emergencies and to provide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries, and sudden illness until a medical professional becomes available. This class is 30 hour and attendance is mandatory at each session. You must provide your own swim suit, towel, and snacks/water bottle. Participants must be at least 15 years of age or older by the last day of class. There is a prerequisite swim test. Price: $150 - members / $175 - non-members
Prerequisite skill tests are completed on the first day of class. All candidates must be of mature and dependable character. Prerequisite skills are:
-
Complete the sequence: Jump into the water from the side, totally submerge, recover to the surface and swim 150 yards, then maintain position at the surface of the water without support by treading for two minutes. While treading you can use only your legs (hands must be placed in your armpits) and your head must remain above the surface of the water. After maintaining position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes, you must swim 50 more yards. While swimming, you must swim continuously, keeping your face in the water and demonstrating good breath control. You may front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both. Swimming on the back or side is not permitted.
-
Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using the front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 10.5 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards on your back to the starting point while maintaining two hands on the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps. To be completed within 1 minute, 40 seconds.
